MVP of Month | Meet David Foster from the Rotary Club of Habersham County
By Barbara Myers Myers Mason APR
Leadership skills and staying power contribute to this Rotarian's success. Meet David Foster who not only serves his community through Rotary, but also as the sports broadcaster for the Habersham Central Raiders.
Habersham County Rotarian David Foster is known as “The Voice of the Habersham Central Raiders.” Since 1989, he has organized, produced and directed sports broadcasts along with play-by-play analysis for Habersham Central High School football. That’s 369 football games in a row. Five years before, he took on the Habersham Central High School men’s and women’s basketball programs.
Foster is a co-owner of WCON Radio in Cornelia, along with his father, John, and his brother, Clayton. His stick-to-it-tiveness and leadership skills extend to Rotary as well. He became involved with Rotary 30 years ago initially because of the deep connection he had through his father, who was a dedicated Rotarian and founding member of the Habersham County club.
“Growing up, I witnessed the positive impact Rotary had on our community and saw firsthand the values of service, leadership and fellowship that my dad exemplified,” he said. “Joining Rotary seemed like a natural way to continue his legacy and contribute to the community in a meaningful way.”
Having served his Rotary Club as president for two terms and slated for a third term next year, Foster said he stays involved with Rotary “because I deeply believe in its worldwide mission of service, peace and community building.”
“Rotary’s global impact aligns with my values, and I am proud to be a part of an organization that makes a difference both locally and internationally,” he said. “Staying involved allows me to continue making a positive impact alongside my father and others who share the same commitment to service. I fully support our local club and the projects we undertake, knowing that they contribute in meaningful ways to our community.”
Foster has been a member of Rotary since 1994, first joining the Rotary Club of White County and then joining the Habersham club in 2001. He is proud of his 29 years of perfect attendance. Serving as an Assistant District Governor for Area 5 from 2007 to 2013, Foster is a multiple Paul Harris Fellow, a Will Watt Fellow, a Hue Thomas Fellow and a Benefactor.
He has been recognized with the District 6910 Lee Arrendale Award, was awarded the Rich Panyik Leadership Award, and serves as the District Early Act Co-Chair with his wife.
Aside from Rotary, Foster serves as a member and deacon of the Level Grove Baptist Church and as an advisory board member of the United Community Bank of Habersham and Jackson counties. He is also a member and treasurer of the North Georgia Technical College Foundation and is a past chair of the Habersham County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. In addition, Foster, a graduate of the Leadership Georgia Foundation, has served as an executive board member and vice chair of the Habersham County Partnership for Growth.
A graduate of Piedmont University, Foster is a member of the board of trustees and the Letterman’s “P” Club. He is a past alumni board president. Other activities include being a founding member of the Habersham Central High School Academic Booster Club, where he has served as the treasurer since its start. He helped establish the Habersham Central Touchdown Club in Mt. Airy, Georgia, and served two terms as president, and he is a founding member and has served as president since 2019 of the Habersham County Football “Ring of Honor.”
In all of his endeavors, Foster thanks his “supportive and hardworking” wife, Leslie, who works as the associate vice president for economic development for the Clarkesville campus of North Georgia Technical College. They are proud of their three daughters, Taylor, Katie and Lexie. Two four-footed animals, a cat named Peeta Trooper and a dog named Marlee, complete their family.
