Dahlonega Sunrise Rotary’s Second Annual Wimpy Mile Raises 11K for Charity

There was nothing Wimpy about these temps as runners showed up to support a good cause.
Dahlonega, GA. –Saturday, February 18th, despite temps in the 30’s, more than 160 people ranging from toddlers to octogenarians turned out for the Dahlonega Sunrise Rotary’s second annual Wimpy Mile run. Thanks to the strong turnout and sponsorship support from local businesses and individuals, more than $11,000 was raised for local charities by the Rotary club.

Race Founder and past-President of the Sunrise Rotary, Dr. Pat Conarro expressed his appreciation for all the support from the community. “The Dahlonega Sunrise Rotary Club thanks all those who supported our event this year. Your support will benefit many charities in Lumpkin County, in many ways,” said Dr. Conarro.

Dubbed the fastest (and easiest) mile in Dahlonega, The Wimpy Mile began at Hancock Park and ended at the boat ramp at the bottom of the hill on Wimpy Mill Road. After a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem by the Lumpkin County High School Band, the overall first-place runner, Connor Moore of Douglasville, GA, covered the one-mile downhill course in just 5:16. Close behind was Edward Dickerson of Dahlonega, who finished in 5:22, followed by Dale Beam, also of Dahlonega, at 5:59.

Less than thirty-seconds later, the first female finisher, April Mathis of Moultrie, GA finished with a time of 6:25, coming in sixth overall. Kristen Kirk of Dahlonega completed the mile in 7:03 to finish second and moments later, Heather Abercrombie, also of Dahlonega, finished third with a time of 7:05.

In addition to the monies raised for local charities, each year a portion of the proceeds are used to purchase and plant a cherry tree along Wimpy Mill Road. “The cherry trees, planted by City of Dahlonega staff, are in recognition of George Washington and Presidents Day, as well as a reminder of our clubs commitment to helping make our community a more beautiful place for all,” explained Dr. Conarro.

A service organization whose mission is “service above self,” the Dahlonega Sunrise Rotary meets each Thursday at 7:30a.m. at the University of North Georgia Banquet Hall located at 402 College Circle, Dahlonega.
