Sunday, April 26, 2015 By Nathan Byrd Please consider supporting the Rotary Club of Chapel Hill by participating in our annual Duck Race raffle. Here is how it works: Participants purchase one or more ducks (numbers are assigned once your paid order is received) that will be raced down the Eno River on Saturday June 6. Details about the race and the great prizes you could win are shown at the link below. Please note that you do not need to be present to win! The duck race has been a major fundraising event in Chapel Hill for many years. It supports Rotary's polio eradication efforts; a myriad of community service and economic development projects at home and abroad; leadership training for our youth; and a range of international exchange programs. Because Rotary service projects are administered by Rotarians, fundraising dollars go almost 100 percent to support targeted charities. http://bit.ly/CHduckraceCREDIT |

Monday, April 8, 2013 By Barbara Paula Wallace One of Rotary's finest efforts is the establishment of the Rotary Centers for International Studies in Peace and Conflict, including the UNC-Duke Rotary Peace Center, where young scholars from across the globe study international cooperation and democracy building. Chapel Hill Rotary Club member Jim Peacock directs the work at UNC. On Sasturday, April 6, club members attended the annual Spring Conference, in which the tenth graduating class of Peace Scholars shared their insights on establishing peace across the world. Rachel Rafferty of Northern Ireland, pictured here, spoke about the potential contribution of history education to reconciliation after violent conflict. |
Monday, October 8, 2012 By Barbara Paula Wallace “The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.” Ralph Waldo Emerson The Chapel Hill Rotary was established in 1928 as a dinner club. It is the oldest club in the Chapel Hill area and the “parent” of the East Chapel Hill and Chapel Hill-Carrboro Sunrise clubs as well as the Hillsborough Rotary Club. The Chapel Hill Rotary has always been a mix of business, professional and university leaders from the local communities with a strong history of service to the community. The Club has a tradition of producing leaders. Eminent past members include Luther Hodges, who was the Governor of North Carolina from 1954-1960. Hodges served as president of Rotary International in 1967, the only North Carolinian ever to hold the title. Club member James Peacock, Distinguished Professor of Anthropology at UNC, was the founder of the Rotary Peace Scholars Program at Carolina and Duke University. Ken Morgan is a past district governor and member of the Board of Directors of Rotary International. And the list goes on…. read more |

Wednesday, October 17, 2012 Invocation by Lynn Blanchard As everyone knows, last week’s University Day was saddened and also made more meaningful with the death of the revered and beloved Bill Friday, statesman and first president of the UNC system. Since then there has been a barrage of remembrances, tributes and reminiscences. No doubt many if not most of the folks in this club can add their own memories and impressions of this legendary, humble public servant. So in thinking about the invocation, there was no doubt that it should be about him, especially as he was an honorary member of this club, and he certainly embodied the Rotary spirit of service above self. read more |
