Welcome to the Rotary Club of Davie/Cooper City

In 1971, a small group of committed business and community leaders came together to form the Davie/Cooper City Rotary Club. Located in the heart of horse country, our meetings are just minutes from downtown Fort Lauderdale, and the beaches.

On Tuesday, April 4..... please plan to have either lunch or dinner (or both) at Pizza Loft, 3514 S. University Dr., in Davie... you may eat in or take out!!

The members of the Davie-Cooper City Rotary Club are involved in a number of both local and world wide charitable and outreach endeavors.

An exciting local endeavor is their annual sponsorship of "Wild Horse Tales", a child literacy event that impacts over three hundred first grade children, from schools in our Davie-Cooper City area. These children, who many times are reluctant to read out loud... are each provided with a hard cover child's book in their classroom, and then, at a later event at the Davie Rodeo Arena, these students are given the opportunity to read .... TO A HORSE!!  The results are amazing.

The world-wide eradication of Polio, is a world wide International Rotary endeavor that all of the 1.2 million Rotarians world-wide, have been involved in, for a number of years...... Working with an number of partner organizations, this goal is very close to being accomplished!!

Please plan on dining at the Pizza Loft Restaurant in Davie, on Tuesday, April 4....  and not only enjoy the best Italian food in the area.... but you will also be supporting some of the Davie-Cooper City Rotary Club's amazing endeavors..

Pizza Loft has a full Italian menu...  and is a favorite restaurant for MANY!!

SEE YOU ON TUESDAY, APRIL 4th.... AT PIZZA LOFT!!   PLEASE INVITE A FRIEND!!

Wild Horse Tales Literacy Program

Horse Tales Literacy helps children discover the joys of reading and the excitement of learning through the wonders of live horses and the Black Stallion books by Walter Farley, as well as other classic horse literature. Our goals are to spark the imagination of first grade students so they will want to learn to read.

The Davie-Cooper City Rotary Club again hosted the Wild Horse Tale's Children's Literacy event at the Bergeron Rodeo Arena, in Davie, FL, on Feb. 22, 2017.

350 first graders (from three local elementary schools) participated .... Each of these children had been previously provided with a hard-cover book, "My Little Black Pony"... and had been learning to read that book in their first grade classes...

On Feb. 22, they all gathered at the Rodeo Arena for a morning of contact with horses... and a lot of horse information!!    The children made the round of ten education stations, that were set up in the Rodeo Arena by the South Florida Trail Riders...

The culmination of this day is the station where each of the first graders .... READS TO A HORSE!!

A HUGE word of thanks to the South Florida Trail Riders (who make this day possible).... the Davie-Cooper City Rotarians who volunteered this day... the teachers and chaperones from the three schools...

The ability to provide these hard cover books to the 350 children is a project each year, of the Davie-Cooper City Rotary Club...

If you would like to learn more about both the local and international Rotary Projects... Please come an visit one of the Davie-Cooper City Rotary meetings, on Wednesdays, at the Blue Moon Diner, 12:15pm, 10076 Griffin Rd., Cooper City, FL

New President, New Members

Last week's meeting was very well attended... and was VERY informational. We took last week's program speaker time and let the club members introduce themselves to our two newest members, Diana Cronkhite and Tami Wolfe. The feedback was excellent!!

Our program this Wed., July 13, will be the report from our 8am Board Meeting that morning (at Sam Engel's office)... This Board Meeting is taking place on the 2nd Wed, instead of the 1st Wed., because of last week's 4th of July holiday.

(in photo #1) Sergeant of Arms Howard Carroll with his new stole!! (no one can now claim that they don't know who is collecting fines!!)

(in photo #2) New Davie-Cooper City Rotary President, Melinda Rao, presenting a thank-you plaque to Past President Darrell Stuehrenberg.

One of the "special" presentations (photo #3) to Incoming President Melinda Rao at the June 29 Installation Dinner, was a bottle of "Brasso"... to polish the Rotary Bell!! The word was that Outgoing President Darrell Stuehrenberg was "VERY NEGLECTFUL" in this important task!! But as the "Brasso" was handed to Melinda... she promptly handed it over to her partner, Dave Mazza (she said that was to be .... "HIS JOB") ....

Sooooooo... last week's question was..... "will the Rotary Bell be polished for our first meeting??"       Thank you, Dave Mazza....   IT WAS POLISHED TO ALLOW ONE TO SEE THEIR IMAGE IN A MIRROR FINISH!!

Rotary 2 Rotary

Thank you for a successful Rotary District 6990 R2R (Rotary to Rotary) Social....

On the evening of Wed., June 15, the Davie-Cooper City Rotary Club and the Plantation Rotary Club hosted the final Rotary District R2R Social for the 2015-2016 Rotary Year at Bokampers Grill in Plantation.

By all of the feedback... it was a GREAT SUCCESS!!

Seventy-five Rotarians and guests were present, representing nineteen of the Rotary Clubs from Rotary District 6990. The fellowship and conversations were ....FIRST RATE!!

The great attendance from Broward County Rotary Clubs and even from Rotary Clubs in north Miami-Dade County was heartening ... but it was great to have Rotarians from Rotary Clubs as far away as Coral Gables, Key Biscayne, Brickell and Bal Harbour.... YOU MIAMI AND SOUTH MIAMI-DADE ATTENDERS TRULY DESERVE AN AWARD!!

We raised a few dollars for Polio Plus, through a lively 50/50 drawing.... had a 50/50 winner.... and in addition, ten folks won Florida Lottery tickets!!

In the photo below, incoming Rotary District 6990 Governor, Debbie Maymon, was welcomed by incoming Davie-Cooper City Rotary Club President, Melinda Rao.

A big word of thanks to Davie-Cooper City Rotary and Plantation Rotary members for all of their assistance...

Thank you, again....

This week, Last week!

Wednesday, May 4, is the first Wednesday of the month .... our 12:15pm club meeting program time will be spent sharing updates from our Rotary Club's Board Meeting that morning. (Bd. members remember to attend the Wed., May 4, 8am Board meeting at Fred Hunters Funeral Home, in Davie.)

Last Wed. (Apr. 27) our Program Speaker was Sherry Schlueter (see photo # 1), the Executive Director of the South Florida Wildlife Center. Sherry shared a very informative presentation. Many do not know that the Ft. Lauderdale based, South Florida Wildlife Center, is the largest in the nation. She encouraged us to get to know this local resource.

Later in the week, Club President, Darrell Stuehrenberg, picked up the $350 check (given to the Davie-Cooper City Rotary Club) from Pizza Loft's owner, Jeff Cohen (see photo # 2). On Tuesday, Apr. 19, the Davie-Cooper City Rotary Club sponsored an all day fundraiser at the Pizza Loft Restaurant in Davie. 20% of all purchases (eat-in and take-out) made to folks who mentioned "ROTARY" were given back to the Davie-Cooper City Rotary Club's next year's Wild Horse Tales Children's Literacy Program. Rotary related restaurant patrons purchased just under $1500 in food and drink purchases. Jeff rounded the number up to give the club $300 and added $50... to give a total of ...$350. THANK YOU, JEFF COHEN AND THE PIZZA LOFT RESTAURANT!!

Beyond the $350 received from Jeff Cohen for the Apr. 19th fund-raiser.... On Apr. 19 the Davie-Cooper City Rotary Club also sold a number of "four day cruise for two" raffle tickets (drawing date is Wed., June 1) and also received a fair amount of gifts for the Rotary International "Polio Plus" effort to eradicate polio world-wide.... IT WAS A GOOD DAY FOR ROTARY!!

Hope to see you for the Wednesday, May 4, 12:15pm Davie-Cooper City Rotary lunch meeting..... at the Blue Moon Diner, 10076 Griffin Rd., Cooper City ....

Wild Horse Tales

Wild Horse Tales Children's Literacy Event.... Wednesday, Feb. 24, 9am.... Bergeron Rodeo Arena, in Davie, FL

The Davie-Cooper City Rotary Club again sponsors the exciting Wild Horse Tale's Children's Literacy event on Wednesday, Feb. 24, 10am, at the Bergeron Rodeo Arena, near downtown Davie, FL.

Working closely with the South Florida Trail Riders Club, the Davie-Cooper City Rotary Club will be impacting 350 first graders from three south Florida elementary schools (Davie Elementary, Driftwood Elementary and Flamingo Elementary).

Earlier this year, each of these first graders had the opportunity to see and touch a horse ..... up close... on their school grounds, on the "First Touch" day, when each of the first graders also received a hard cover book, "LittleBlack, A Pony" from the Davie-Cooper City Rotary Club.

For the past weeks, these 350 students have been working with their teachers and fellow students, as they prepare to read from that book ..... to a horse!!

On Wednesday, Feb. 24, beginning at 10am at the Bergeron Rodeo Arena near downtown Davie, the students will participate in this "Second Touch" activity. They also will learn all about horses and the care of horses during this Wednesday morning event.

Rotarian Nick Coffin (and member of the South Florida Trail Riders), has coordinated Wild Horse Tales with both the Davie-Cooper City Rotary Club and the South Florida Trail Riders for a number of years.

Children's Literacy is just one of the variety of service project areas that Rotary Clubs world-wide are involved in. The Davie-Cooper City Rotary Club has been sponsoring this annual Wild Horse Tales Children's Literacy event for a number of years.

South Florida professional and business people are invited to consider visiting a weekly Wednesday, 12:15pm, Davie-Cooper City Rotary Club luncheon meeting, at the Blue Moon Diner, 10076 Griffin Rd., in Cooper City. This Rotary Club, like those Rotary Clubs all around the world, are actively involved in local and world-wide service to humanity. The Rotary International motto is: Service above Self!!

The public is invited to come and experience this exciting morning at the Davie Bergeron Rodeo Arena.

The photos below are from earlier this year, showing the first graders from Davie Elementary School participating in the "First Touch" activity.

E.A.S.E. Foundation Fire

Davie Police said they have arrested a juvenile in connection with the fire that destroyed a local foundation's building.

The minor was charged with arson, according to police, who did not identify him.

The EASE Foundation lost everything in Saturday's fire, the charity’s executive director said.

"I give out food five days a week. I have nothing to give anymore because everything is lost, so we don't have anything,” Linda Owen said. “We're starting from nothing. We don't even have a space."

The first started on Saturday at about 3:30 p.m. when a juvenile lit a trash can on fire in Potter Park, police said.

The blaze consumed shelves of food and piles of toys for 200 families in need this holiday season, Owen said.

“They wouldn't let me near it. I just wanted to get in and they wouldn't let me in to the building and all of our stuff and all of the records and all of the food and all of the toys were just up in flames ... and gone,” said Owen, who helped start the foundation 27 years ago.

More Local News

The organization is getting a boost as it begins to rebuild, however. The pastor of Liberty Life Center has helped bring $5,000 to the foundation – and she did it in a matter of minutes.

"I asked how many people will give $500 and they started standing, then $100, and they started standing, and then $50, then $20 and by the time we were done we had $5,000,” pastor Dawn McCann said.

Owen said that with no place to put food and toy donations, all she can accept right now is money.

The EASE Foundation’s mailing address is 6901 Orange Drive, Davie, FL 33314. For more information, see www.easefoundation.org.

Did You Know??

In 1945, 49 Rotarians helped draft the United Nations Charter.

Rotary and the United Nations have a long history of working together and sharing similar visions for a more peaceful world.

In 1942, Rotary clubs from 21 nations organized a conference in London to develop a vision for advancing education, science, and culture after World War II. That event was a precursor to UNESCO. In 1945, 49 Rotarians went to San Francisco to help draft the UN Charter. Rotary and the UN have been close partners ever since, a relationship that’s apparent through PolioPlus and work with UN agencies.

“The invitation to Rotary International to participate in the United Nations Conference as consultant to the United States delegation was not merely a gesture of good will and respect toward a great organization. It was a simple recognition of the practical part Rotary’s members have played and will continue to play in the development of understanding among nations. The representatives of Rotary were needed at San Francisco and, as you well know, they made a considerable contribution to the Charter itself, and particularly to the framing of provisions for the Economic and Social Council.”

Rotary currently holds the highest consultative status offered to a nongovernmental organization by the UN’s Economic and Social Council, which oversees many specialized UN agencies. Rotary maintains and furthers its relationship with a number of UN bodies, programs, commissions, and agencies through its representative network . This network consists of RI representatives to the United Nations and other organizations.
