2021-2022 Rotary Year ReCap

We are back at Second Presbyterian Church for this week's Rotary meeting! Van Miller will provide a recap of our Rotary year and will then pass the gavel to next year's President, Tony Bauman, who will share his experience at the Rotary International Convention earlier this month in Houston.

David Haynes is our greeter, Tony Bauman is housekeeping, and we're still looking for someone to provide the invocation. Sign up today!  sign up for future meetings here.

Thanks to everyone who came out last week to volunteer at Midwest Food Bank. We had a great group and our MFB volunteer manager said we were his most productive group! We packaged a lot of Apple Jacks.

You have received a bill for the first half of Rotary Year 2022-23. Please submit payment to Chuck ASAP since we will be billed by Rotary International on July 1.

4 Way Test

UKRAINE Dinner Fundraiser

"Night for Ukraine"
When: April 23rd, 6PM
Location: BCPA
Tickets: $20/ticket
Goal is to raise $10,000 for Zolotonosha, Ukraine for the non-profit "City Youth Development Center" EDRPOU #35569306.
All proceeds will be used to purchase medical supplies for the territorial defense and help refugees from Kharkiv, Chernihiv, Luhansk, Donbas and Mariupol. $3,500 has already been sent which has been used to purchase medical supplies.
Guests will enjoy Southern Comfort cuisine and a cash bar,  bid on auction items, and a 50/50 raffle. The night will include entertainment and information on this non-profit with a video from people living in Zolotonosha.

Needs from Rotarians:
Sign up sheet will be up soon for various roles including event set up, break down, bar runners, door (check-in), bartenders, selling t-shirts, raffle ticket sellers, point of sale volunteers, and the day-of runners (picking up food from caterers, etc). Also, I believe the biggest impact you can all make are with ticket sales. I would like to be able to present at your clubs and provide tickets to Rotarians that are interested in helping sell. This will be our biggest obstacle as the event is so last minute. Adam and I believe that if all our Rotary groups support this project and help sell tickets, we will be able to make a huge impact for the community of Zolotonosha.

UPDATE: 2021 BED BLITZ from David Haynes

Bed Blitz was a success!  Thank you David Haynes and Matt Coates for your service!

On Saturday October 9th , The West Bloomington  Revitalization Project will be hosting it’s annual Bed Blitz at the Youth Build facility located at 360 Wylie Drive #305 in Normal Illinois.

For those not familiar with this campaign, The West Bloomington  Revitalization Project gives local kids a twin sized bed frame, new mattress, sheets, pillows ,a blanket, laundry detergent, books, a hygiene kit and teddy bear.

Several Rotarians including Chuck, Ryan and I have helped before at this event.

The kits are all precut and require minimal skill or heavy lifting.   The good news is the great people of this community have already rallied around this “ Blitz” but there are still a few slots available where we can partner with them.

I have included the Sign-Up Genius link if you are available to help the day of.  Even if you end up signing up solo, we would ask that you wear your Rotary shirt.

Hope to see you there !!!!

One week from today! Join us at the Labor Day Parade

One week from today, on Monday, September 6, the Labor Day Parade returns.

And once again, Rotarians are called to participate at the start of the parade, carrying 50 American flags as well as the military branch flags, the Rotary flag, and our Rotary banner.  This means we hope to have 60-65 Rotarians in attendance from all 7 local Rotary clubs.

We will line up on Front Street by the Grossinger Motors Arena.  Parking is often limited in this area.

Wear your Rotary apparel.

Please arrive by 9:45am to line up.  The parade will step off at 10am.

It is about a one-mile walk from the arena to Miller Park.  It can be quite warm.  It's fine to wear a hat or cap, as well as sunglasses.

Because we are at the start of the parade, we are typically finished by 11am.  Please stay for photos!

Many Rotarians stay in the park to watch the rest of the parade.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask me.

There is no need to RSVP, but please consider being in attendance.  We need you!

David Haynes: our club's newest John Stevens Memorial Award Honoree

What a great club meeting last week!

It began with a surprise announcement as David Haynes
was awarded the John Stevens Award.

The John Stevens Award is the most prestigious award given by our club.

The award began in the 2000-2001 Rotary year after the tragic death of an outstanding BRC member, John Stevens. John was hit by a car while jogging. The award is to honor those in our club who emulate John's Rotarian spirit.

There is a very strict list of criteria that a Rotarian must meet to qualify for this award. Due to that fact, only 12 of our members have been fortunate enough to receive this award in the past twenty years. David is now the thirteenth recipient.

Based on the reaction from the club, we all know there are many reasons David is deserving of this recognition. In just the past six months David has agreed to serve as vice president, chaired an incredibly successful pork chop fundraiser amid loads of uncertainty while implementing online sales, has served as housekeeper and other club tasks regularly, registered for Rotary Leadership Institute, and sponsored two new members who joined our club at the first meeting of this Rotary year.
David is a model Rotarian who puts Service Above Self.
We're proud to have him in the Rotary Club of Bloomington. Congratulations, David!

Pork Chop Fundraiser Update

David Haynes gave a brief update on the success of our club's pork chop lunch fundraiser.

Looks like we will net more than $12,500!  These funds are going to make a BIG difference locally - and maybe even globally.

John Tarvin - once again - was the Championship TicketSeller!  John sold 240+ tickets!

And - just curious - who invited the piggie?

Welcome to Rotary Year 2021-2022!

PASSING THE GAVEL

President Pete Falstad called our meeting to order.  Marta Traylor, Bruce Cather, and David Haynes were thanked for their service as directors on our club's board.  After additional brief comments, he passed the gavel to incoming president, Van Miller.

President Van expressed appreciation to - now - Past President Pete and presented him with an honorary gavel.

Our club welcomed two new members: Matt Coates and Jeff Lindsay.  Both were sponsored by David Haynes.  Past President Kevin Kuebler inducted them into Rotary.

President Van shared a presentation, "Serve to Change Lives," highlighting Rotary International's theme & goals as well as our club's goals.

In attendance was a very special guest, Laine Twanow, Van's wife.

ZEKE WOULD BE SO PROUD: Dictionaries in the time of COVID-19

Here are some of our photos from a few of the District 87 third graders who recently received their dictionaries.

Thanks to everyone's donations to our Foundation over the years - and the 2015 Club Centennial Fundraiser - we were once again able to give every third grader in District 87 (380 in total) a dictionary!

Our longtime past member, Zeke Stanfield would have been extremely proud of all of us and the efforts to make his dream become a reality!!!

A big THANK YOU to everyone in our awesome Club!

Hopefully next year, we can be back in the schools and actually present the books to the students.

Have a wonderful Holiday Season!
From John

BRC meets in person - first time since March

Bloomington Rotary Club
October 22, 2020
12-1pm

Miller Park Pavilion

This was our first in-person meeting since March of this year.

Between 20-30 members were in attendance.

Appreciation goes out to Board Director Laura Lamberti for coordinating the meeting space and box lunches.  Thanks, also to John Tarvin for donating bottled water.

President Pete called the meeting to order.  He congratulated Past President John Szabo for John's Paul Harris Fellow + 1 recognition.  Pete also "shouted out" to Bill Wills and Kevin Kuebler for their TRF donor recognitions.  A birthday auction was held with a variety of items, raised over $300.

Past President Doug Johnson presented a program on Rotary International's commitment to eradicate polio from the earth.

Members donated generously to The Rotary Foundation's Polio Plus Fund.  More than $1200 was raised in a matter of minutes, with several other donations pledged.

The club plans to meet in-person once a month.  Next week, 10/29, the club will meet virtually.

A Letter from Our Club President

Even in the mist of a pandemic Rotary still is a driving force in our community, state and world doing great things.  Recently our club participated with Salvation Army and assisted in their annual fund raiser golf outing.  We had volunteers at the check-in and even have a few players.  It was a great day and money was raised for a great local cause.  Our service committee will continue to look for ways we can participate with local groups to better our community.

Our weekly meeting have been going on via zoom, and if you have missed them you are missing out on some quality programs thanks to Nate and others, as well as great fellowship while we all get on the link.  We will continue to use zoom for the forseeable future, but we hope that we will be meeting again at Second Pres soon.

We have a special in person meeting scheduled for Thursday, October 22nd at the Miller Park pavilion for all who feel comfortable meeting in person.  Of course, masks will be worn upon entry and exit, and we will practice social distanceing.  There is plenty of space inside and out for fellowship and lunch.  Speaking of lunch, the club will provide lunch for all who plan to attend, we just need to know if you are coming.  Stay tuned for a way to sign up for lunch on October 22nd.  We will also use our time together on the 22nd to share about polio and what Rotary International is doing to help eradicate polio from the planet.  Our own Doug Johnson will be speaking of his families own battle with polio.  Come ready to learn and give toward Polio Plus as this is our annual campain to raise money and awareness for polio eradication. We will have a special recognition for those who are able to give $20 or more.

Lastly, you may be wondering where your dues are going and if we will continue to charge $300 per semester in the future.  This last year we were not able to do our annual pork chop fundraiser, so all the money that is spent on our community projects have been funded by your dues.  Moving forward, the board has agreed that if we are not meeting in person starting in January, dues will be reduces to cover just the basic costs of running our club and our financial commitment to Rotary International.  The amount has not been finalized, but we should have a number for you in November.

This has been a trying year for many of us, and I appreciate your patience with the leadership of our club.  Many of you have stepped up and answered the call to get involved to make the Bloomington Rotary Club a great organization and a fun place to hang out on Thursdays.  Please feel free to pass along suggestions if you feel we could be doing something better.

Respectfully,

Pete

Notes from April 9 2020 online meeting

38 in attendance. (Wow!)

President Mary Ann shared that Past District Governor Larry Pennie passed away.  Also, longstanding Normal Rotarian Gordon Ropp has entered hospice care.  She asked that we keep them and their families in our prayers and our thoughts.

She also mentioned that the Service Committee has met and is sending club service funds to support Salvation Army and MarcFirst.  There are other service opportunities that our club will be supporting soon.  (seperate email with more details to follow)

Rotarian Tony Bauman spoke on how COVID 19 is impacting District 87.  The district is participating in e-learning and teachers are not grading students' work.  Students are reviewing previous content, rather than learning new content.  There is a hope that this will support and lift up students that may be behind in the classroom, rather than leaving them even further behind.  The district's focus is the student and their overall welfare.  Teachers and administrators are reaching out to students and their families to determine any needs.  There is food distribution (17 sites, 3 days a week); this will be expanding to include school supplies, books, and hygiene products.  A partnership between the district and Frontier has allowed students that receive reduced or free lunches to also receive internet access in their homes.

Rotarian Warren Kistner spoke on how COVID 19 is impacting Illinois Wesleyan University.  The campus, being more traditional in its learning structure, has made the move to e-learning.  There are a few students that are allowed to shelter at home on campus (mostly international students).  Warren's work in the Career Center is finding that students are affected by the lack of campus work, "real" work, internships, etc.  ISU Alumni are engaged: many are participating in an ongoing video series, and some are sharing opportunities for work.  May Term is expected to be online.

Rotarian Melissa Fasig spoke on how COVID 19 is impacting Heartland Community College.  The campus already has a robust structure for this type of learning, and students have access to support (i.e., laptops, hotspots).  Tech Support is still available. to students.  Counseling is still available.  This year's fundraising push, ironically, has been to bolster the campus Student Emergency Fund.  Good timing!  Lots of need.  Our club's annual Rotary scholarships are still needed and will be issued.

Rotarian Van Miller spoke on how COVID 19 is impacting Illinois State University.  The campus moved to centralized communication, so different departments were unable to continue their usual communication strategies.  This is important to assure that there is clear and accurate information coming from campus officials.  Commencement in May will be virtual, with graduates invited to attend in person in December.  Both Preview and summer courses will be online.  The Red & White campaign supports students in need, and this is a place where donors to ISU have found an active and current use for their donations.  ISU development is sponsoring a texting campaign this week - the first of its kind for the department/campus.

Mary Ann ended the meeting, thanking everyone for their attendance.  She reminded the group that the Board should stay online for a Board meeting.

Mary Ann encouraged members to consider a gift to the Bloomington Rotary Foundation to support additional service projects.  There is local need, and our club can be responsive.

Remember to be the inspiration!
Have a great and safe week and let's shoot for 45 in this week's ZOOM Meeting!
