Presidents' Message
It’s all about engagement. Thanks to Judy Newman and the 4J panel at our last meeting, we are better informed and prepared to vote on the 4J local option levy in May. Whether you vote no or yes, please engage your franchise and vote this May! Similarly, this Tuesday we’ll be hearing from the Balmer Institute for Mental Health. The mental health of our community, our family and our friends is important to everyone’s well-being. Remember RI President McInally’s challenge to focus on mental health this Rotary year and ask “How are you, really?”. Let’s be engaged with each other to notice if someone in our circle is struggling so we can be prepared to help.
Finally, I’m asking you all to be engaged with your Club and find a way to support our fundraising event. We have seats to fill. Please reach out and invite your contacts to come to the event and find out what this great organization of caring individuals does for the community and the world beyond our borders. Even if you are unable to attend, consider accepting the challenge of filling a table! Event registration is at: https://event.auctria.com/3c47b0a4-aad3-47fb-8266-7be61f4d5c44/.
I hope to see you Tuesday.
Jerry
PS – Please note that our meeting on Tuesday April 2nd will be at the Eugene Ballet’s studios at The MidTown, 174 E 16th Ave, Eugene, OR 97401

April 2nd Meeting: Ballet at the Midtown Arts Center
Eugene Ballet is honored to host the April 2nd Rotary meeting in the Dan & Peggy Neal Studio at the Midtown Arts Center (www.midtownartscenter.org). Past-president Michael Syman-Degler will provide a Mucho Gusto taco buffet for lunch ($20.00 per person). Following the meeting's formalities, Rotarians will be invited to join Eugene Ballet in The Haugland Family Studios for a sneak peak of the next installment in Eugene Ballet's Live Music Season. Resident Choreographer Suzanne Haag will introduce an exciting new contemporary ballet featuring music by Eugene native Tracy Bonham.
Two-time GRAMMY® nominee and New York-based musician Tracy Bonham joins Eugene Ballet in song, sound, and story on the Hult Center stage April 6 & 7. This exciting collaboration is a tribute to the soundscapes of Suzanne's youth. Bonham, a multi-talented singer, songwriter, violinist, and guitarist will play from her broad catalogue of music—from alternative rock to jazz and everything in between. Her raw, intimate lyrics paint the picture of the life of an artist and harken back to her native Oregonian roots.
Tracy Bonham's music is both deeply personal and wholly universal. Every note of hers is an homage to what it is like to be a performer, to make art, to be a person, and to love in this complicated and beautiful world. I am so grateful to Tracy for this collaboration."
-Suzanne Haag, Resident Choreographer

Craig Smith Honored by Eugene Education Foundation
Congratulations, again, to our own Craig Smith who was honored this week by the Eugene Education Fund with their first Leadership in Education Award. The crowd of supporters included Craig's wife, daughters, and son-in-law, current and past 4j School Board members, fellow Rotarians, and other colleagues and community members gathered to celebrate the importance of public education. The award was presented by former School Board member Anne Marie Levis, highlighting the many years of leadership, advocacy and support that Craig provided for children and schools in our community. Community Service in April: Boys and Girls Club
As you know, our Rotary Club has been supporting the Boys and Girls Club in a variety of ways last year and this year, and we have another community service need to help them get set up in their newly-renovated space. They have ordered some new equipment that needs to be assembled and have some cleaning and spiffing up jobs where they could use our help. I know the next 6 weeks are a busy time, and at the same time my guess is there are some of us (and our friends) who could spare a couple of hours to help with some of these things. In order to be as flexible with your schedule and availability, we are going to split these into smaller work parties where Rotarians can work with Boys and Girls Club staff.
Instead of sending out a sign-up, I'm going to ask that you email me at [email protected] if you can help with any of these (each bulleted item is its own opportunity), and then we can work individually with timing. The sooner you can let me know, the better so that we can coordinate with Boys and Girls Club. Here are the needs:
Between now and April 11th
Move all classroom furniture to the gym
Between now and April 16th
Assemble bumper pool table
Repair back of the cubbiesBuild new cubbies
Assemble classroom tables
Between April 6 and April 15
Assemble and mount art display
Mount the TVs
Between April 13 and April 15
Move all furniture back out of the gym
Pressure wash entry walk way and walls
General cleaning and room set-up
Morning of April 19
Move supplies from Faith Center and back to Clubhouse
Thank you so much for helping where you can! This is a great partnership between our club and this important community organization.
