Local Ten Friends Team Effort A Solid Start To Future International Service

This story meets SRC’s mission of service - and the connection of that service not only for our community - but international service - and in this case, highlighting the connection of our support to a nonprofit located here - and the business Pema and Nurbu run here in High Camp - with the international element.

Sisters Rotary Club provides the funding for a local nonprofit to buy backpacks for children in Tilahe Nepal.

Sisters Rotary continues its support of the Sisters-based nonprofit Ten Friends. Ten Friends was founded by Mark LaMont and Rand Runko, two Sisters School District teachers, over 17 years ago after taking trips to Nepal guided by Nurbu Sherpa.  Ten Friends currently focuses on funding an orphanage, a school for young women, and establishment of libraries in remote villages in Nepal.

Info about Ten Friends and all its programs can be found at Tenfriends.org.

A new initiative lead by the owners of High Camp Himalayan Food and Taphouse in Sisters, Nurbu and Pema Sherpa, joined Ten Friends earlier this year.  This new initiative led by Nurbu and Pema focuses on the education of children and vocational skills development of young adults in the village of Tilahe, Nepal.

During a trip to Tilahe in October of 2023, Pema and Nurbu provided the children with backpacks purchased with a donation provided by the Sisters Rotary Club.  The joy and excitement of the children as they opened their backpacks and explored the school supplies within was captured in the photos below, along with their expression of gratitude to those that made the gift possible.

Every Rotarian, Every Year

The "Every Rotarian, Every Year" (EREY) initiative is an effort to encourage every Rotarian to contribute to The Rotary Foundation's Annual Fund each Rotary year, which runs from July 1 to June 30. The goal is to achieve 100% participation from club members, regardless of the donation amount. This initiative aims to support the Rotary Foundation's work, from local humanitarian efforts to international scholarships and project grants.

Though there's no official minimum donation amount set by Rotary International for EREY, the Rotary Club of Sisters encourages members to contribute at least $100 per year. When members contribute $100 or more per year, they help their club qualify for a banner recognizing this achievement.

The EREY funds are typically allocated through the "SHARE" system, which means that after three years, 50% of the funds raised go to the World Fund, and the other 50% is returned to the districts to fund local and international projects. The idea is that even a small donation, when combined with others, can make a significant impact.

By contributing annually, Rotarians ensure ongoing support for vital projects around the world, and they become part of a sustained effort to bring positive change.

PROGRESS!!: Goals for President Bill's Year to Keep in Focus

GOALS IN BILL's YEAR:

Annual Rotary Foundation goal:  $7,500 (As of January 30th, we've impressively reached $7,495. This is a testament to the dedication and generosity of our members.)

Polio Plus contribution goal:  $2,500 (We aim to raise $2,500, and currently, we have collected more than half the goal without the ever-increasing 50/50 dollars banked to date. Still looking to totally free the world of Polio.)

EREY:  Every Rotarian Every Year-- 100% participation in donating to The Rotary Foundation $100 annually

Sisters Rotary Foundation: The endowment with OCF continues to thrive at $110,000+. Local account at US Bank at ~$20k will allow us to operate our SHS Scholarship work this year and more!

Goal for membership----every member find one new community leader to invite.  (Current club count is 40!! --- net plus 10 this year and increase over the past year and a half of 20+ new members!!)

President Bill's Update

As we wrap up another thrilling Mega Raffle, I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who participated and contributed to making this event a resounding success. This year’s Mega Raffle Drawing was a wonderful gathering, and it was delightful to see so many familiar faces. A special appreciation goes out to Josh Smith at The Paper Place for hosting our ticket drawing event. We could not have asked for a better venue.

Lei Darcy, as usual, did an outstanding job arranging for treats and refreshments that everyone thoroughly enjoyed. Did you catch Mayor Preedin in action? Yes, that was him, graciously pulling the winning tickets, adding a touch of civic pride to our gathering!

Looking forward, we have important events that require your enthusiastic participation. On April 16th, we continue our tradition with the Books for Kids backpack stuff. This initiative is crucial as we commit annually to equip Sisters First graders with exciting treats to foster their love of reading. A big shoutout to Peg Bermel, who has led this effort for the last 12-14 years. Although Peg is stepping down this year, she passes the baton to Ann Davis with our deepest gratitude for her years of dedication. The club owes much to Peg's efforts, and we are confident Ann will lead with the same passion and dedication.

Moreover, preparations for Sister’s 4th of July Roundup are well underway. We are in discussions with the City of Sisters to ensure this year's celebration is spectacular, featuring all our traditional favorites: pancakes, a parade, a car show, livestock, and music. Your involvement is crucial to make this another event to remember!

Your continued support and participation make all our endeavors possible. Let's keep the momentum going and make 2024 a year of impactful community service and unforgettable gatherings.
