History of the Rotary Club of South Shreveport
The Rotary Club of South Shreveport was originally organized under the name of The Cedar Grove Club in February of 1927, and received their charter on April 26, 1927. This was the second local club chartered--the first was the Rotary Club of Shreveport. The charter was received at a meeting at the Woodman Building. The regular meeting place was the Cedar Grove Methodist Church (where Common Ground Community is now located) until 1939, when they moved to Southside Baptist Church. In 1948 the meeting place was changed to the New Cedar Grove Methodist Church. Meetings were held there until 1963 when the El Chico's Restaurant in Madison Park was chosen as the new meeting place. Meetings were held there until October 1984, when the Sheraton-Pierremont was selected. Later moves were to the Pierremont Oaks Tennis Club, then the East Ridge Country Club and currently Copeland's Restaurant. |
Common Ground Service Project
Atkins Elementary is an underserved school for children in Pre-K through 5th grade in the Cedar Grove community. There is no active PTA at this school so our club has stepped in for several years to fill that role to some degree. Part of our $4,000 grant money also provides an appreciation breakfast for the staff. They always enjoy that and several of our members have attended that early morning event in the past. Here are pictures from last week! Thanks to all who participated! Sam brought a guest - a young person (Ella) who needed community service hours. Phil Moon's son Alex also attended and pitched in. Remember that family members, friends, young people are welcome at any of our Common Ground projects. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() read more |
