Youth Service

Youth Service - The Future of Rotary is in Their Hands!

We are fortunate to have a close relationship with our youth through various sources. Our EarlyAct Clubs in elementary schools can introduce young students to the concept of service to others. Our Interact Clubs continue that tradition in high school, and our Rotaract Clubs further that service ideal in college and as members begin their careers.

Another source that fosters development of service is the Youth Exchange Program. The Rotary Club of Montgomery-Rocky Hill sponsored an exchange student, and shares their experience in this story.

The Rotary Club of Montgomery/Rocky Hill was honored to host an exchange student this past year, Saeko Kurayama.  A resident of Osaka, Japan, Saeko spent a full year with us and was hosted by four different families.

Her school principal in Osaka encouraged her to accept this adventure in America to challenge and support her growth in the English language.  She attended Montgomery High School as a junior, finding her most joy with the band and choir as music is her passion. And her English improved over the course of the year.

Of all the varieties of food she sampled, Macaroni & Cheese became her favorite. Some even found its way home in her suitcase! Culturally, Saeko had the opportunity to visit many areas including Boston, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, New York City, and Niagara Falls.

The District Rotary Youth Exchange director, Jim Murray, organized activities with other exchange students from the area creating fun experiences. Sledding was one event, and Saeko did find that snow can make you cold.

Saeko hopes to continue to improve her English understanding and use this skill in her future, but first she will enjoy her senior year of school back home, taking with her many wonderful memories.

We will miss her greatly.
