Red Line Happy Hour May 7

Final Reports for District Grants are due by 15 May 2025!

All Final Reports for 2024-25 District community grants are due 15 May.   Please submit them in DACdb with supporting documentation.

Per Rotary’s Grant Terms and Conditions, an acceptable Final Report must include:
  1. Project Impact – Describe how the project advanced the goals of the selected area(s) of focus. Be sure to include the number of beneficiaries reached.
  2. Objectives & Outcomes – Provide a summary of how the project met the specific objectives outlined in your grant application, the metrics you used, and any data collected.
  3. Sustainability – Explain how the results of the project will be sustained over time.
  4. Collaboration – Outline the roles of host and international partners, as well as any cooperating organizations.
  5. Financial Report – Submit a detailed account of all expenditures. Upload invoices dated after 1 July that reflect spending consistent with the approved budget (or as close to the full grant amount as possible).
We recognize that projects may have encountered delays or needed adjustments. The Grants Committee will accept deviations from the original scope or budget as long as they align with the project’s overall purpose. Please include a brief explanation of any changes made.

Submission Process:
  • Final Reports must be submitted via DACdb.
  • Some fields will autofill based on your original application; please review and update them with what actually occurred.
  • Upload supporting documentation to help the Grants Committee verify completion and compliance with the grant requirements.
Once your report is reviewed and approved, the remaining 50% of awarded DDF funds will be released. The earlier you submit and receive approval, the sooner the balance will be disbursed.

For help with DACdb (adding signatories, uploading documents, etc.), refer to DACdb Support.  If you have questions about the report content or need feedback, email one of the Grants Committee Members:  Mimi Kanda [email protected], Phil Reynolds [email protected], Linda Lymas [email protected], Patsy Ezell [email protected], Daniel Fisher [email protected]  or B.J. Chamberlain-Skinner [email protected]

We look forward to learning about the meaningful work your Rotary Club has accomplished!

Support Educating Children in Ethiopia with Inspire Ethiopia's Generous Matching Grant Opportunity

I am writing about Inspire Ethiopia, a special endeavor being undertaken by the Rotary Club of Potomac-Bethesda to give children in rural Ethiopia access to education.  I’m reaching out with a request to help us finish what we started — and take advantage of a remarkable opportunity that has been presented to us!

The next phase of construction at the Wadeye primary and secondary schools is the construction of the teacher’s residence (14 residential rooms and meeting/dining/recreation hall) and providing the other essential items for the upcoming school year (more computers with embedded educational software, a photocopier, printer/scanners, and Wi-Fi), which will cost a total of $88,000.00 USD.  Most recently, the Rotary Club of Potomac-Bethesda generously granted $5000 toward the project through our club's Rotary Foundation.  Additionally, we are attempting to collect as much as possible through individual contributions.  Regarding collecting individual contributions, we have some exciting news: A generous private donor has stepped up and found a way to match our contributions, but only if we act immediately.  That means your contribution now has double the power.

If we can raise as much as possible, we have the opportunity of doubling all contributions toward this vital work.  Your generous contributions will allow work to begin as soon as possible ensuring the residence is ready for the start of the school year in September, as requested by the Ministry of Education.  It will also help us attract and retain excellent teachers over the course of the summer for the fall.

This is a unique chance to double our impact — and help bring high-quality education to where it’s needed most.

Please consider making a pledge today by contacting our club's Treasurer, Lou Bartolo, at [email protected].

Thank you again for your continued support and generosity.

Have a beautiful day!

Todd
Dr. Todd A. Nitkin, DPM, FACFAS, MPH
Past President, the Potomac-Bethesda Rotary Club

RLI Graduate Course: A Historic First for District 7620!

Rotary Leadership Institute Graduate Course: A Historic First!

On Saturday, September 7th, District 7620 made history by hosting its first-ever Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) graduate course! This milestone event also marked the return of a graduate-level course offered by the Mid-Atlantic RLI, which hadn’t occurred since January 2020. Alongside this historic graduate course, RLI Levels 1 and 3 were also offered, all expertly organized by the District’s RLI Coordinator, Pam Kreis.

The course, "Exploring the Rich History of Rotary," was developed by RLI Facilitator Chris Zabriskie. Drawing from a template provided by RLI Northeast America (RLI-NEA), Chris expanded the course to include segments on Rotary’s history and traditions, the art of storytelling, and how to best share your club’s unique history. The result? A dynamic and enriching experience for the 11 participants who attended.

These participants represented four districts and included RLI Level 3 graduates, RLI facilitators, and one special guest, Jack Huskin. Jack, who had planned to attend Level 2, found himself auditing the graduate class when Level 2 was canceled due to low enrollment.

As with all RLI courses, this was far from a lecture-style class. Instead, it was a highly engaging, participatory experience. Attendees were given reading selections and encouraged to present their reflections to the group. To enhance their storytelling skills, participants shared their out-briefs in a compelling, narrative format. A highlight of the day was the segment on Rotary personalities, where attendees tested their acting chops by role-playing historical figures in first-person narratives—a fun and creative twist that brought history to life!

My Leadership Team

Welcome to The Magic of Rotary year !

Dear Fellow Rotarians,

It is with immense honor that I step into the role of District Governor. As we embark on this journey together, our decisions will be guided by a vision for Rotary's enduring future, not just immediate outcomes. My heartfelt gratitude extends to each of you for entrusting me with this responsibility. In my dual role as leader and follower within our district, I am committed to fostering an environment of collaboration and enduring progress.

This year, we aspire to transform our district into a model of outward engagement and robust partnerships, both internally and with external stakeholders. The inspiring levels of collaboration showcased during my installation are just the beginning. I encourage every club to embrace this spirit, working together and with community partners to amplify our impact.

Some initiatives for this year!

1. Outward-Facing Engagement: We aim to elevate Rotary's visibility and impact in our communities, setting a standard of leadership and service.  Continuously invite other leaders, friends, and family to your events, showcase meetings and events that you are proud of.  Maintain the good, enhance the weak, and create new projects/fundraisers.  Do it with others!

2. Strengthening Networks: This year, let's support our own by utilizing the services offered by fellow Rotarians. From real estate to printing services, our district is rich with resources that can benefit all members, use your space as a networking tool to help the youth in mentorship, and adults in partnerships.  Let's talk about our jobs, let's talk about our lives, let's connect people together with our networks.

3. Enhanced Collaboration: I urge every club to increase interactions with other clubs. AG’s will organize official district governor visits by areas to enhance the exchange of diverse ideas, opportunity for collaboration, and greater community impact, I expect at these area visits, not only shall there be Rotarians, but also leaders from other organizations, as well as community members.  From the district level, we have already collaborated with our neighboring district for the District Conference in October, and for RYLA. I have engaged in conversation with academic institutions like The Carter School at GMU, The Universities at Shady Grove, and University of Maryland to further our collaborative efforts.

4. Welcoming New Members: We should aim to create a welcoming environment for new members to integrate and share their skills. With a diverse array of clubs in our district, there’s a place for everyone to thrive.  I am asking each club to sponsor 2-4 new members where the club pays for their dues the first year! This isn’t only about numbers, it's an opportunity to involve new skills and talents, as long as we let them step up to the plate.  Let’s start asking the questions as to why people want to join?  What do they expect out of their membership? What's important to them?  What projects would they like to work on?  We all need to feel valued and heard, this will not only increase our retention rate, but add a greater impact on the amazing work we already do as rotarians!

5. Boosting Foundation Contributions: Contributions to the Rotary International Foundation make a significant impact both locally and globally. I encourage all to witness the projects funded by our efforts to appreciate the breadth of our influence.  I am asking for each Rotarian to make at the minimum a $25 contribution to the Rotary Foundation. If you are unsure how to do it, just ask!

6. Living the Rotary Action Plan: I firmly believe we can champion the Rotary Action plan where Together we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change across the globe in our communities and in ourselves. We shall aim to increase our impact, expand our reach, enhance participant engagement, and improve our adaptability.

As we move forward, I am not dictating specific projects but rather encouraging clubs to increase their activities and collaborate effectively. Remember, while we are part of a district, our strength and vibrancy originate from individual clubs.

Together, let's harness our collectiv hi e abilities to create "The Magic of Rotary" and forge a path that others will follow for years to come. Thank you, and I look forward to a year of shared successes, and greater impact!

A few words I want to share that I had shared during my installation speech:

-If you hate someone put yourself in their shoes, you might be more alike than you think

-If you hate yourself talk to someone, loneliness creates self doubt

-If you feel overwhelmed write down your thoughts

-If you feel stuck in the past plan for the future

-If you feel anxious about the future focus on the present

-If you feel restless take a long walk

-If you feel emotionally drained take a break

-If you feel uninspired try something new

-If you feel like giving up remember how good it feels to succeed

-Comfort is the enemy of success

-If you're not failing your not succeeding

-You move fast by doing it alone, however you can move far by doing it with others

Warm regards,

Nomie Hamid

Rotary Brings Community Together for Urbana (MD) Park & Ride Cleanup with 35+ Volunteers

On a bright Saturday morning, the Rotary Club of Southern Frederick County rallied together with over 35 volunteers—neighbors, and students — for a successful quarterly cleanup at the Urbana Park & Ride.  Armed with gloves, trash bags, and community spirit, the group collected litter, shared stories, and forged new connections.  High school students earned needed service hours toward graduation, while local residents met new friends and discovered the heart of Rotary in action.  The event not only beautified a key commuter space but also sparked conversations about service, belonging, and the power of showing up for your community.

"Exchange is not a year in one's life, but a life in a year".   This is a common saying among Rotarians, Rotex and Youth Exchange Students to describe Youth Exchange.
Both Tabitha and Elsie, two high school students from D7620, are experiencing just that this Rotary year. As they near the end of their time abroad, we would like to invite you to take a peek into their year.  We would also like to introduce our outbound class of Rotary Youth Exchange Students for the Rotary year 2025-2026.
