![]() Sunday, June 29, 2025 By Raghavan Sadagopan Taylor Farm Park is now home to a bright new initiative that helps children learn, grow, and thrive—right from the ground up. The Born Learning Trail, officially opened this month, transforms a section of the park into a vibrant, interactive learning space for families with young children. This community gem was made possible through a Rotary District 7600 grant and led by the Rotary Club of Innsbrook, in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Western Henrico, United Way of Greater Richmond & Petersburg, and Henrico County Parks & Recreation. Together, these partners brought vision, funding, and action to create a trail designed to give preschool-age children a strong developmental start through outdoor play. A Rotary Vision in Action When the Rotary year began, the Rotary Club of Innsbrook identified Youth Empowerment and Community Engagement as two of its core focus areas. The Early Learning Trail project is a shining example of those priorities in action—merging service, innovation, and partnership to support early childhood education. The project was one of two Early Learning Trails installed this Rotary year, with a sister trail already completed at Short Pump Park. These trails reflect Rotary’s global mission to create opportunities for children while advancing health, education, and community connection. What Is a Born Learning Trail? Developed by United Way Worldwide, the Born Learning Trail features 10 interactive activity stations designed to boost brain development through play. Painted graphics and signage encourage children and their caregivers to hop, count, rhyme, explore nature, and engage in conversations—turning a casual walk into a powerful learning experience. Each station supports skills in: Literacy and language development Physical activity and motor skills Imagination and social-emotional learning Rotary’s Commitment to Youth and Child Development Rotary’s long-standing dedication to empowering youth goes far beyond scholarships and leadership programs. By investing in early childhood education, Rotary Clubs like Innsbrook are helping shape a stronger foundation for lifelong learning and equity. Projects like the Born Learning Trail are built on the belief that early moments matter. Supporting children during their most formative years leads to better academic outcomes, stronger families, and more connected communities. Rotary’s involvement ensures these opportunities are available not just in classrooms, but in parks, neighborhoods, and everyday spaces where families live and play. This trail is a part of Rotary Club of Innsbrook’s broader commitment to youth—alongside sponsoring 12 RYLA delegates, chartering three new Interact Clubs, and supporting literacy and school infrastructure projects locally and abroad. Powered by Partnership - The impact of the trail reflects the strength of its collaborators: The Rotary Club of Innsbrook provided leadership, coordination, and volunteer power. The Rotary Club of Western Henrico brought added support to the build day and planning. The United Way ensured the trail was grounded in research-backed early childhood strategies. Henrico County Parks & Rec prepared the site and supported installation and promotion. Together, more than 50 Rotarians and 100 volunteers contributed to the planning, painting, and installation—part of over 2,000 volunteer hours logged by the Rotary Club of Innsbrook this year. A Trail for All Families Whether it’s counting the steps between trees or pretending to be animals, the trail turns outdoor play into an opportunity to bond, build vocabulary, and encourage creativity. The signage is bilingual and accessible, ensuring children of all backgrounds can participate. Community Voices “Supporting early learning doesn’t always require a classroom,” said Raghavan Sadagopan, President of the Rotary Club of Innsbrook. “With trails like this, we bring learning to life right in the heart of the community.” A Lasting Investment As families explore Taylor Farm Park this summer, they’ll find more than recreation—they’ll discover a place where Rotary’s mission to serve and uplift truly takes root. The Early Learning Trail stands as a vibrant example of what’s possible when service organizations, nonprofits, and local government work hand-in-hand to plant the seeds of a brighter future. |

![]() Monday, June 9, 2025 On a bright and inspiring Saturday morning, members and friends of the Rotary Club of Innsbrook teamed up with student leaders from the Interact Club of Glen Allen High School to participate in the Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s annual Clean the Bay Day. This collaborative effort took place at Bryan Park, a beloved green space in our community, and contributed to the ongoing mission of protecting the health and beauty of the Chesapeake Bay watershed. Armed with gloves, trash bags, and plenty of enthusiasm, volunteers combed the park’s trails, fields, and streams to remove litter and debris that could otherwise harm local ecosystems. From discarded bottles to tangled fishing lines, every item collected was a step toward a cleaner, healthier environment. What made this cleanup especially meaningful was the multi-generational participation. Many Rotarians brought their children, passing along the values of environmental responsibility, civic engagement, and service above self. Witnessing young people and families working side by side to make a difference underscored Rotary’s commitment to empowering youth and building a better future. The partnership with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation offered a hands-on way to support conservation efforts and contribute to one of the largest volunteer-driven cleanup events in the state. The event also served as a platform for Interact members to take the lead, gain service hours, and deepen their connection to their community and the environment. We are proud of all who participated and grateful for the spirit of service that continues to unite Rotarians, students, and community partners. Together, we made Bryan Park a little cleaner—and the Bay a little healthier. Let’s keep the momentum going! |

![]() Saturday, April 19, 2025 Peja, Kosovo – In a powerful effort to promote peace and reconciliation in a region still healing from the scars of war, the Rotary Club of Peja, Kosovo, in partnership with the Rotary Club of Innsbrook, Virginia, has announced a transformative Global Grant project aimed at educating students and teachers in the principles of human rights and peacebuilding. With a budget of $159,900, the initiative—titled “Peace and Human Rights Education for Teachers and Students in Peja, Kosovo”—addresses two of Rotary International’s key areas of focus: peacebuilding and conflict prevention, and basic education and literacy. Kosovo, a nation that emerged from the shadows of conflict following the Kosovo War over two decades ago, continues to face social tensions rooted in ethnic and religious divisions. Children born long after the conflict often grow up in communities still fractured by mistrust and misunderstanding. This new program, designed in collaboration with Hardwired Global, a nonprofit with extensive experience in human rights education, aims to change that narrative. The project will train 10 educators to become Trainers of Trainers, who will then instruct 60 additional teachers and ultimately reach 4,800 students in five local schools. "Peace is not just the absence of conflict, but the presence of understanding and respect," said a spokesperson from the Rotary Club of Peja. "By equipping educators with the tools to teach human rights and model pluralism, we’re planting seeds for long-term change." The curriculum integrates peace education into everyday school life, creating a model that can be replicated in schools across the country. These participating schools will become designated “Model Peace and Pluralism” institutions—centers of community change and hope. A recent needs assessment conducted by the Rotary Club of Peja, supported by data from the Ministry of Education and field experience by Hardwired, highlighted the urgent demand for this kind of training. Teachers report facing daily challenges in managing classrooms marked by ethnic and social division, with little formal preparation for fostering inclusive environments. “Hardwired’s proven track record in Kosovo and beyond demonstrates that students can learn to appreciate the dignity and rights of others—when given the chance,” said Tina Ramirez, Founder of Hardwired Global. “We’re thrilled to expand our work in partnership with Rotary and empower local leaders to drive sustainable peace.” The project’s emphasis on sustainability is key. By training teachers who can in turn train others, and by embedding these principles into the educational fabric of schools, the impact is expected to ripple outward for years to come. As the program launches, the Rotary Clubs of Peja and Innsbrook invite global Rotarians and donors to join them in this groundbreaking effort. Together, they aim to ensure that the next generation of Kosovo’s youth will inherit not only the stories of war—but also the tools for peace. |

![]() Thursday, March 27, 2025 What started as a vision to support early childhood development through outdoor learning has now become a reality. The Early Learning Trail, a collaborative effort led by the Rotary Clubs of Innsbrook and Western Henrico, officially opened its gates with a grand ribbon-cutting ceremony on March 27, welcoming children, community leaders, and partners to celebrate its impact. The Early Learning Trail, located near Short Pump Elementary School, is designed to stimulate young minds through interactive, playful learning stations that focus on literacy, numeracy, and physical movement. This initiative, supported by the Rotary Foundation, United Way of Greater Richmond & Petersburg, and local schools, exemplifies the power of community partnerships in creating meaningful educational opportunities. The event began at 8:15 a.m. with opening remarks from William Sutton of the Rotary Club of Innsbrook, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance led by Dinesh Nayak of the Rotary Club of Western Henrico. Raghavan Sadagopan, President of the Rotary Club of Innsbrook, highlighted how the project aligns with Rotary’s focus on youth development and community impact. Mark Deutsch from the Rotary Club of Western Henrico offered insight into how the idea for the Learning Trail came together through months of planning and collaboration. Special guests Misty D. Roundtree from the Henrico County Board of Supervisors and Barbara Couto Sipe, President & CEO of United Way of Greater Richmond & Petersburg, also shared remarks, applauding the project for fostering early learning in a creative and engaging way. The highlight of the morning came at 9:05 a.m. when the first group of enthusiastic students from Short Pump Elementary School arrived. The ribbon was officially cut, and children began exploring the trail with guidance from Rotary volunteers. Laughter and excitement filled the air as students hopped, counted, traced letters, and explored colors and shapes—all part of the trail's educational design. Special thanks go to Tiffany Beisselt of United Way of Greater Richmond & Petersburg, who coordinated the volunteers and orchestrated the day's student-led activities with remarkable energy and attention to detail. Her leadership ensured that every child had a joyful and engaging experience on the trail. Deep gratitude is also extended to William Sutton, whose dedication and tireless efforts were instrumental in bringing the Early Learning Trail to life. His leadership was the backbone of this successful community initiative. Throughout the morning, additional groups from Short Pump Elementary and LeafSpring School joined the fun. Children also enjoyed chalk play, visited community booths, and had a thrilling opportunity to explore a fire truck, thanks to the Henrico Fire Department. The firefighters’ presence added an exciting and educational dimension to the day, giving kids a hands-on chance to learn about fire safety and emergency services. “This trail is a gift to our youngest learners,” said one Rotary volunteer. “We’re not just promoting education—we’re building joy into learning and showing kids that their community cares.” The Early Learning Trail stands as a testament to what can be achieved when service organizations, schools, and community leaders come together for a shared purpose. As it becomes a daily part of children's routines, its impact will continue to grow—one hop, skip, and smile at a time. A short video of the event can be found >>HERE<< |

Top 5 Key Factors to Successfully Charter an Interact Club
By Raghavan Sadagopan Chartering a new Interact Club is a rare and meaningful achievement, and the Rotary Club of Innsbrook is thrilled to announce the successful establishment of an Interact Club at Glen Allen High School. Interact, a Rotary-sponsored service club for young leaders aged 12-18, provides incredible opportunities to develop leadership skills, connect with peers, and make a positive impact in their communities. This initiative exemplifies Rotary’s commitment to empowering youth and building future leaders. On October 11, 2024, we celebrated the installation of the club’s officers, led by Charter President McKinley Sutton. The event was marked by the installation of officers by Raghavan Sadagopan, President of the Rotary Club of Innsbrook, and the presentation of the official charter certificate by Joy Kline, Governor of Rotary District 7600, to school advisor Ms. Rollins. This achievement would not have been possible without the dedication and teamwork of many individuals, highlighting the key factors that ensure a successful chartering process. 1. School Advisor: A Critical AnchorSecuring a committed school advisor, like Ms. Rollins at Glen Allen High School, proved instrumental in this process. Advisors serve as the essential bridge between the school, students, and Rotary mentors, helping align the club’s activities with school policies and providing day-to-day guidance. Ms. Rollins' leadership ensured the new club had the structure and support it needed to thrive from the start. 2. Student Leadership: Empowering Young Change-MakersAt the heart of the new Interact Club is its dynamic student leadership. The installation of McKinley Sutton as Charter President was a moment of pride for her father, William Sutton, the Rotary club of Innsbrook’s Community Service Chair. McKinley’s prior participation in Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) events has already showcased her potential, positioning her to become a remarkable leader with a bright future as a Rotaractor and Rotarian. Her team’s energy and vision will inspire peers to embrace service and leadership. 3. Partnership between the School, the Rotary Club, and the Rotary District: A Strong FoundationThe success of the Glen Allen Interact Club highlights the importance of collaboration between the school, the Rotary Club of Innsbrook, and Rotary District 7600. The partnership ensured the club had access to the resources, mentorship, and guidance needed to flourish. Special thanks go to Kevin Fachetti, Vocational Service Chair, whose communication with both students and Ms. Rollins kept the initiative on track. William Sutton worked alongside Kevin, demonstrating the power of teamwork in bringing the vision to life. In addition, insights from Sasha Reynolds, the Rotary District 7600 Interact chair and a member of the Rotary Club of Prince George County proved invaluable in navigating the chartering process. This collaborative effort exemplifies how a shared vision and partnership are essential for a successful Interact Club launch. 4. Parents of the Interact Board: Partners in ProgressParental involvement plays a vital role in student success, and the parents of McKinley and other board members have been key supporters throughout this journey. Their encouragement and logistical support have ensured students can balance their leadership responsibilities with academic commitments. The involvement of parents strengthens the club’s foundation, ensuring it can grow sustainably in the years to come. 5. Time: Don’t Rush the ProcessThis initiative, which began under the leadership of past president Susan, demonstrates that successful projects take time and sustained effort. Rotary’s commitment to service goes beyond individual terms of office, fostering continuity and success across leadership transitions. Chartering the Glen Allen High School Interact Club required several months of collaboration, planning, and mentorship. The process began in one Rotary year and was completed in another, proving that patience and persistence are key to achieving long-lasting success. The chartering of the Glen Allen High School Interact Club is a shining example of Rotary’s commitment to empowering the next generation of leaders. It perfectly aligns with the Rotary Club of Innsbrook’s focus on youth empowerment, a top priority this year. We look forward to seeing McKinley Sutton and her team lead their peers in community service projects and meaningful initiatives throughout the school year. This achievement wouldn’t have been possible without the collaboration of students, parents, advisors, and Rotary mentors. Together, we are empowering future leaders and building stronger communities. Stay tuned for more updates as the Interact Club embarks on its exciting journey! read more |

![]() Friday, October 18, 2024 By Raghavan Sadagopan At a recent meeting of the Rotary Club of Innsbrook, we were honored to welcome Zac Frederick, CEO and Founder of Crescent Development. Frederick delivered an engaging and insightful presentation, focusing on the growing need for affordable housing in our community. His message underscored the importance of accessible housing options for families of all income levels and its far-reaching impact on society. The Importance of Affordable Housing Frederick emphasized that affordable housing goes beyond providing shelter—it is the cornerstone of healthier, more resilient communities. When individuals and families have access to safe, stable homes, they experience greater security and stability, enabling them to contribute meaningfully to their neighborhoods. In addition, affordable housing promotes economic mobility by allowing families to allocate more resources toward education, healthcare, and savings. Frederick explained how secure housing fosters social equity, creating a level playing field where everyone, regardless of income, has the opportunity to succeed and thrive. A Call to Action Frederick's talk sparked meaningful discussions among members about the Rotary's role in supporting housing initiatives. With housing becoming increasingly expensive, it is essential for communities, nonprofits, and businesses to work together to develop solutions. But the story of this partnership goes back to a chance moment that sparked a movement. Since that first spontaneous shopping trip, the Rotary Club of Innsbrook has been a driving force behind Bright Beginnings, sponsoring hundreds of children each year and volunteering countless hours to make the experience memorable for local youth. “Service Above Self” is more than just a motto for the Rotary; it’s a way of life. Every year, the Rotary members shop with children, helping them pick out clothes, shoes, backpacks, and supplies to ensure they feel prepared and confident as they enter the school year. For many children, this is their first time experiencing the joy of new school essentials, and it leaves a lasting impact not just on the students but also on the volunteers. “We’re not just preparing kids for school; we’re giving them confidence and reminding them they matter,” said Lisa Hollier, a dedicated Rotary member with a deep passion for the Bright Beginnings program. “The joy on their faces when they leave with their new items is absolutely priceless.” read more |
